The Amount of Dark Matter in Spiral Galaxies

چکیده

The ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis of galactic disks imbedded in dark matter halos is examined. First, decompositions of the rotation curves of NGC2613, 3198, 6503, and 7184 are analyzed. For these galaxies the radial velocity dispersions of the stars have been measured. If the parameters of the decompositions are chosen according to the ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis, the Toomre Q stability parameter is sytematically less than one, which is a strong argument against the ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis. Next, density wave theory arguments are used to describe the morphology of the spiral arms of NGC3223, 157, and 7083. It is shown that the ‘maximum’ disk hypothesis is not consistent with the observed morphologies of the galaxies.

Anomalous Gravitational Effects in the Universe

Based on previously published alternative reflections on gravitation, additional conclusions concerning anomalous gravitational effects in the universe are derived. For systems with spherical mass distribution and high central density of the luminous matter, abnormal increases in the gravitational potential towards the centers of these systems are derived. These anomalous increases are calculat...

Dark Matter in Galaxies: Observational overview

I review the observational side of the present state of the debate about the dark matter in galaxies, with emphasis on the core/cusp problem in low surface brightness galaxies, and the question of maximum / sub-maximum disks in spiral galaxies. Some remarks are made about the dwarf spheroidals around the Milky Way, and about elliptical galaxies.

Balance of dark and luminous mass in rotating galaxies.

A fine balance between dark and baryonic mass is observed in spiral galaxies. As the contribution of the baryons to the total rotation velocity increases, the contribution of the dark matter decreases by a compensating amount. This poses a fine-tuning problem for galaxy formation models, and may point to new physics for dark matter particles or even a modification of gravity.

Dark Matter Scaling Relations

We investigate the structure of dark matter halos by means of the kinematics of a very large sample of spiral galaxies of all luminosities. The observed rotation curves show an universal profile which is the sum of an exponential thin disk term and a spherical halo term with a flat density core. We find that the Burkert profile proposed to describe the dark matter halo density distribution of d...

Dark Matter and Dark Energy as a Effects of Modified Gravity *

We explain the effect of dark matter (flat rotation curve) using modified gravitational dynamics. We investigate in this context a low energy limit of generalized general relativity with a nonlinear Lagrangian L ∝ R, where R is the (generalized) Ricci scalar and n is parameter estimated from SNIa data. We estimate parameter β in modified gravitational potential V (r) ∝ − 1 r (1 + ( r rc )). The...
